Imagine waking up, pulling back the curtains, and finding a pygmy hippo staring back at you.
Not on television. Not from a safari vehicle.
Right outside your bedroom window.
And if hippos aren't your thing? How about watching a polar bear dive underwater while you're still in your pyjamas?
Welcome to Pairi Daiza, Belgium. Where someone apparently looked at the traditional zoo experience and thought, "You know what this needs? Bedrooms."
And then took that idea gloriously too far.
Why the hell would I want to go?
Because this isn't your average day at the zoo.
Pairi Daiza is an enormous zoological park in Brugelette, Belgium, with ten themed worlds, thousands of animals, remarkable gardens and architecture inspired by cultures around the globe.
But here's where things get interesting.
The resort has created extraordinary overnight accommodations overlooking animal habitats. Some rooms even have underwater viewing windows.
You don't just visit the animals. You spend the night next door.
And when the day visitors head home, you've still got some rather spectacular company.
What could my adventure look like?
🦛 The house hippos
Riverside Haven — Pygmy hippos, tropical surroundings and a rather unusual morning coffee.
Stay in a tropical fishing village built on stilts, overlooking pygmy hippos, drills and monkeys.
Some rooms feature enormous windows extending partly underwater, offering glimpses of the hippos above and below the surface.
Imagine sitting with your morning coffee while a pygmy hippo goes about its business just beyond the glass.
Honestly, that's a better hotel view than another parking lot.
🐻❄️ The polar bear plunge
White Bear House — Watch an Arctic giant from the comfort of your room.
Some rooms offer underwater views into the polar bears' habitat.
There's something extraordinary about watching one of the planet's most powerful predators move effortlessly through the water, separated from your bedroom by glass.
You might find yourself sitting there for hours.
Who needs television?
🦈 Sleeping with sharks
Shark Cove — An underwater world inspired by a lost Mayan city.
Inside Edenya, Pairi Daiza's tropical greenhouse, underwater suites look into an aquatic world of sharks, rays and turtles.
The accommodations draw inspiration from a submerged Mayan city.
Ancient ruins. Tropical waters. Sharks drifting past your window.
Possibly the most interesting reason ever to stay in bed.
And if those aren't quite ridiculous enough...
The resort has a few more extraordinary neighbours worth meeting.
🐆 Jaguars after dark — Jaguar Falls
Mayan-inspired accommodations overlooking jaguar habitats, with dramatic waterfalls and the possibility of spotting a magnificent cat moving through its surroundings.
🦭 A walrus at your window — Walrus House
Underwater viewing rooms reveal the surprisingly graceful movements of enormous, tusked marine mammals. They're rather more elegant underwater than you might expect.
🐺 A little wilderness — Full Moon Lodge
Forest-inspired accommodations overlooking wolves and brown bears, with rustic interiors and private sauna facilities in select lodging options.
Imagine settling in with a glass of wine while the wildlife carries on outside.
Now that's a night in worth having.
How do I make this adventure happen?
Here's the beautiful thing.
You don't have to plan an entire European vacation around a zoo. But you absolutely could.
Pairi Daiza is in Belgium, making it a wonderfully unexpected centrepiece for a bigger European adventure.
Maybe you spend a couple of nights with the animals, then head off to explore the medieval streets of Bruges, discover Belgium's legendary beer culture, and make questionable decisions about how many waffles constitute a reasonable breakfast.
Or perhaps you turn it into something bigger.
A quirky anniversary escape. A milestone birthday with friends. A few unforgettable nights on your way between Amsterdam and Paris.
The zoo might be what gets you on the plane. The rest of the adventure is where we get to have some fun.
A few things worth knowing before you pack your pyjamas
Pairi Daiza's overnight packages generally include park access, breakfast and dinner, with opportunities to enjoy parts of the park beyond regular daytime visiting hours.
But not all rooms offer the same experience.
Some overlook animal habitats from above. Others have underwater viewing windows. And even with the perfect room, the animals are still animals. Nobody can guarantee a polar bear will swim past on cue.
Room category matters. So do dates, availability and exactly what's included in your package.
If you're travelling all the way to Belgium for a particular animal encounter, those details are worth getting right.
And that's where thoughtful planning makes a difference.
Your vacation deserves a better story.
Maybe you've always wanted to see a polar bear underwater.
Maybe you love unusual hotels.
Or maybe you've just discovered that sleeping beside a pygmy hippo is something you never knew belonged on your bucket list.
At Second Shift Adventures, we love finding experiences like these and figuring out how to turn them into adventures that actually fit the people taking them.
Not somebody else's perfect itinerary.
