Italian Road Trip: Choose Your Flavour
What to Expect
A loosely wrangled Italian road trip with Rome as the launchpad, smart routing, key stays, and plenty of room for detours. Expect pasta, piazzas, tiny towns, scenic backroads, too much cheese, weird little shops, and just enough structure to keep things smooth while the nonsense finds us naturally. A Northern option and a Southern option of curated places with unique sites not exactly on the main stream.
Feral Abroad - The Italian Road Trip add-on
Is what happens when Rome was supposed to be the finale… but then someone said, “Okay, but what if we just kept going?”
The Vibe
Rome is the starting point — because honestly, there are worse places to begin a bad idea.
From there, we hit the road. This is not a rigid follow-the-flag tour. This is an Italian road trip with good bones: a few key stays, smart routing, planned stops, and enough structure to keep the whole thing from turning into “why are we on a goat road with no snacks?”
The in-between? That’s yours. Take the detours. Follow the weird sign. Stop for the view. Order the thing you can’t pronounce. Get mildly lost in a tiny town and call it culture.
Camper vans or car rentals. Tiny towns. Sleepy villages. Weird little shops. Too much cheese. Old Italian men on corners sipping espresso and limoncello, passionately solving the world’s problems with hand gestures and absolutely no indoor voices.
A few things planned. Plenty left open. Exactly enough structure to keep it smooth, and enough breathing room for the nonsense to find you.
Italian Road Trip:Choose Your Flavour
From Rome, we build the route around your chosen flavour: Northern Italy or Southern Italy — both with their own kind of beautiful nonsense, backroad charm, and Second Shift adventure energy.
The trip can be shaped as a car rental road trip, boutique hotel, countryside inn route, or a camper van adventure with a mix of inns and campsites with a “that looks cool, let’s sleep there" freedom.
Over 8 days, we’ll lock in 3 key stops along the route — your anchor points, your regroup zones, your “okay, everyone made it here alive and has stories” checkpoints. . Each checkpoint includes a group dinner plan, because at some point the wine needs to flow, the stories need to get louder, and someone needs to explain why they took a goat road instead of the highway.
Planned dates

For travellers who want coastlines, ancient ruins, sun-baked towns, chaotic charm, roadside stops, big flavours, and scenery that makes you pull over every 11 minutes. This version leans warm, lively, coastal, dramatic, and a little more gloriously unhinged. Think sea views, old villages, ancient ruins, busy piazzas, roadside food stops, tiny towns, and enough beautiful chaos to make the whole thing feel deeply alive.
Key stops include:
Positano
Matera
Bari / Monopoli
Best for people who like:
Coastlines and sea views
Ancient ruins
Warm-weather wandering
Tiny towns with personality

This adventure is a great fit for travellers who like:
Road trips with personality
Italy beyond the obvious stops
Small towns, scenic drives, food stops, and local wandering
Beautiful places with room for weird little side quests
Travelling with friends, couples, siblings, or the group chat
Trips that feel independent but not unsupported
A few things planned, but not every hour scheduled
Coming home with better stories than souvenirs
This is especially fun for people who want Italy with a little freedom baked in — the kind of trip where the route matters, but the random stop for cheese, wine, scenery, or a suspiciously perfect roadside café might become the best part
“At this age, adventure means saying yes to the weird detour and no to the shared bathroom.”
trip pace
This trip has a moderate and flexible pace, depending on the route selected. Travellers should expect some walking, luggage handling, hotel changes, uneven streets, stairs, cobblestones, parking logistics, driving days, and occasional “well, that road is narrower than expected” moments.
Northern Italy may include mountain roads, lakeside towns, hill towns, and scenic stops that involve walking or stairs.
Southern Italy may include coastal roads, busy towns, uneven streets, warm temperatures, stairs, and lively traffic environments.
That said, the route can be shaped to suit different comfort levels. We can look at fewer hotel changes, shorter driving days, more central stays, and a more relaxed flow if needed. This is best suited for travellers who are comfortable with some walking, some driving, and a little bit of beautiful Italian unpredictability.
