This is a 12-day Romania adventure built around Intrepid’s eight-day Halloween in Transylvania tour, with two nights in Cluj-Napoca before and two nights in Bucharest after.
The middle is full of medieval towns, local legends, mountain roads, forest paths and one very committed Halloween. The bookends make it easier to arrive, recover, explore and leave without turning the international flight days into a punishment ritual.
Why we picked it
Because Transylvania deserves better than a quick Bran Castle photo and a plastic vampire cape.
The real appeal is the layering: Sighișoara’s medieval streets, Viscri’s village texture, Brașov beneath the Carpathians, the strange underground scale of Turda Salt Mine, the stories around Hoia Forest and the complicated collision of history, folklore and tourism at Bran Castle.
Intrepid runs the strong core itinerary. Second Shift handles the human bits around it: flight strategy, arrival nights, departure nights, transfers and optional add-ons that make the trip feel complete.

Do the thing
Turda and Hoia Forest — go underground, then follow the stories into the trees
Turda Salt Mine brings the first plot twist: a vast underground space that feels more science fiction than medieval Romania.
Then Hoia Forest shifts the mood again. Stories of strange lights, disappearances and paranormal activity have followed it for years. You do not have to believe any of them. You just have to admit that an autumn forest with a suspicious reputation is an excellent place to hear them.
Sighișoara, Viscri and Brașov — let the old towns do the heavy lifting
Sighișoara brings steep lanes, colourful houses and medieval towers without needing anyone to release decorative bats.
Viscri slows things down with village life, Saxon heritage and a fortified church. Brașov adds mountain energy, a lively old centre and the Carpathians waiting just beyond the rooftops.
The point is not collecting town names. It is feeling the rhythm change as the journey moves from city to village, forest to mountain and legend to lived history.
Bran Castle — meet Dracula, sort of
Bran Castle is where Vlad the Impaler, Bram Stoker’s fictional count, Romanian history and enthusiastic tourism marketing have all been stirred together.
A good guide helps separate the history from the legend without ruining either one.
Take the castle photo. Enjoy the drama. Then keep going, because Transylvania is far more interesting than the one story everyone already knows.
The Second Shift bookends
Cluj-Napoca — arrive before the adventure demands anything from you
Give the trip room to begin properly. Wander the old centre, find a good café, eat something Romanian and let the jet lag burn off before anyone is expected to absorb history or perform group enthusiasm.
The extra nights are not filler. They protect the entire trip from delayed flights, missing luggage and the deeply unreasonable idea that you should land in Europe and immediately become interesting.
Bucharest — stay long enough for the trip to land
Do not finish a story-rich journey and immediately enter the fluorescent purgatory of a long-haul airport connection.
Possible add-ons include Therme București, a Romanian wine tasting, craft beer, the Village Museum, Palace of Parliament or a well-led communist-history walk. The final mix should depend on flight times and the humans travelling.
Second Shift rule
Let the famous thing get your attention.
Then make enough room in the trip for the place to prove it has better stories.
